Collection Overview

The Office of University Chaplain records contain a variety of materials documenting religious life at Ohio Northern University (ONU). Notably, the collection contains recordings of speeches delivered at ONU by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Dr. Coretta Scott King, Dr. Yolanda King, and Dr. Bernice King. The bulk of the materials are various printed materials that promoted religious life opportunities at ONU including chapel services. Additionally, the collection contains a history of the Office of the University Chaplain compiled by former-Chaplain Vernon LaSala in 2012.

This collection is open for research. Administrative History

In 1899 Ohio Northern University became a United Methodist Church affiliated university, which laid the groundwork for the creation of the Office of the University Chaplain. The University Chaplain is part of the Office of Student Life and is responsible for providing leadership and support for religious and spiritual life at Ohio Northern University.

Processing Information

Collection was processed by Graduate Intern Andrew Taylor, and then updated by Matt Francis in the summer of 2023. Extra copies of printed materials were removed from the collection. Due to community research interests, King family materials were arranged into their own series.
