The College was originally conisted of six course concentrations (Common School, Teachers, English, Scientific, Literature, and Classical). During the early half of the twentieth century previously independent academic programs were folded into the College of Liberal Arts, including the College of Music, the College of Education, the School of Commerce, the School of Fine Arts, and the School of Oratory.

In 1927 the School was renamed the Getty College of Liberal Arts in honor of former ONU students George Franklin Getty (class of 1879) and Sarah Catherine (Risher) Getty (student 1875-1878). During the 1977-1978 academic year the college was renamed again, this time to the Getty College of Arts and Sciences.
